How to Apply for a Grant

Submitting a Proposal

General grant application deadlines are March 1, June 1, September 1 and December 1. We accept mini-grant proposals for amounts of $500 or less at any time.

Please submit only one copy of your grant application. You are welcome to include photos, brochures, a CD/DVD and/or letters of support. Please do not exceed a total of ten pages, including the budget page.

Remember – your proposal must be postmarked no later than the date of the deadline (i.e. Sept. 1). Do not send your proposal by fax or email without prior consent of the Program Officer. DO NOT BIND or place your proposal in any folder. Two-sided copies are welcome and acceptable.

Please include the following information in your grant application to make sure Seventh Generation Fund will have all the information we need in order to consider your proposal:

Budget information – Please include two separate budgets. One should itemize your organization’s overall operational budget for the year. In the other, provide a projected budget for the project for which you are submitting the grant application to our organization, along with all estimated expenses to complete the project. You must also indicate all other sources of funding for your project, whether pending or committed.

Non-Profit Certification – If you have 501(c)(3) status determining your project as a non-profit organization, please attach a copy of your certification. If not, please submit a copy of your fiscal sponsor’s information.

Program Criteria – Describe in your proposal us how your goals and objectives align with our criteria and how your project will accomplish these goals within your community.

Please include this information in your proposal:
  • Who are you?
    Briefly describe your community and your organization or project. Include a list of your Board of Directors or Advisory Board, your staff or community representatives, tribal affiliations (if any) and contact information.

  • What is going on?
    Describe the needs, issues and concerns of your community. What are the social, cultural, environmental or other justice issues your organization is working on? What do you hope to accomplish with the help of this grant?

  • When will you begin your project?
    Why is it important that you receive funding by a specific date? What is your timetable for completing the project?

  • Where are you located?
    Tell us about your reservation, aboriginal territories, reserve, rancheria, urban Indian community, or wherever in the Indigenous world your project or organization exists and describe its relationship / involvement with the issues that it is working to solve.

  • How will you accomplish your work?
    Describe your project in detail – what specific community organizing activities and strategies to engage your community members do you propose to meet your objectives?

Although Seventh Generation Fund has the utmost respect for all Native communities and organizations that submit requests for funding, we are a small organization and cannot fund all of the worthy proposals we receive.

We will acknowledge receipt of your proposal with a response card and will notify you in writing within eight weeks of the award determination. We ask that you not call about the status of your proposal. We will contact you if we need additional information.

Seventh Generation Fund does not fund:

  • Individuals
  • Non-Indigenous organizations
  • Political campaigns or direct lobbying
  • Scholarships or fellowships
  • Fundraising events or Pow Wows
  • Religious organizations or missionary activities
  • Construction or capital improvements
